Mercy for This Morning
Lamentations 3–5 · 1 Corinthians 4
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

TODAY’S DEVOTION
These words are not spoken from an easy season. Lamentations looks directly at devastation, grief, judgment, and loss. In the middle of that honest sorrow, the writer deliberately recalls the steadfast mercy of God. Hope does not arise because the circumstances have already changed; it arises because God’s character has not.
New mercy does not erase yesterday’s pain or excuse yesterday’s sin. It means despair does not receive the final word. God has already placed sufficient compassion within the morning He has given you. Receive it with humility. Confess what must be confessed, thank Him for what remains, and take today’s step without demanding strength for every future day at once. Great is His faithfulness—not ours—and that is why we can begin again.

The KJV’s “mercies” points to God’s steadfast covenant love—His loyal goodness, not a passing emotion or an indulgence toward sin.
Lamentations 3 speaks hope from inside Jerusalem’s devastation. The confession of new mercy does not deny grief or judgment; it anchors grief in the unchanging character of God.
