Mercy for His Name’s Sake
Ezekiel 19–21
“And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.”

TODAY’S DEVOTION
Israel’s history in Ezekiel 20 is a record of repeated rebellion, yet God repeatedly acts for His name’s sake. This does not make sin unimportant. It makes grace astonishing. God remains faithful because faithfulness belongs to His character. His mercy is not a reward for our consistency; it flows from who He is and brings honor to His holy name.
We must never use grace as permission to continue in sin. The mercy that does not treat us according to our corrupt ways calls us out of those ways. When God restores, He reveals His holiness and creates a people who bear His name with reverence. If failure has made you believe that God can no longer work in your life, look again at His character. Humble yourself, return, and let His faithfulness become the reason your life changes. His name is greater than your worst chapter.

Shēm means name and can carry the sense of identity, character, reputation, and renown. God acts for His name’s sake because His dealings reveal who He truly is.
Ezekiel 20 rehearses Israel’s rebellion from Egypt onward. God’s restraint and restoration protect the holiness of His name before the nations, while the people are called to remember, repent, and recognize Him as the Lord.
