How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

A simple biblical framework for honest prayer when words feel difficult or distant.

The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought.

Romans 8:26 KJV

Prayer does not depend on impressive language. God already knows your need, and Scripture gives words when your own words feel unavailable.

Begin with what is true

Name who God is and what Scripture reveals about Him. You might begin, ‘Lord, You are faithful,’ or read a Psalm aloud. Truth steadies prayer when emotion is confused.

Tell God the truth about you

The Psalms include joy, grief, fear, repentance, confusion, and praise. Honest prayer is not irreverent when it remains surrendered to God. Say what hurts, confess what is wrong, and ask plainly for help.

  1. Praise God for one attribute.
  2. Confess one specific need or sin.
  3. Thank Him for one mercy.
  4. Ask for today’s help.
  5. Pray one verse back to Him.

Allow quiet

Prayer is not measured by continuous speech. Sit before God with an open Bible. Refuse distraction, but do not manufacture an emotional experience. Faithful attention can itself be an act of devotion.
