How to Begin Reading the Bible When You Don’t Know Where to Start
A simple, pressure-free path for opening Scripture and building understanding one day at a time.
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Psalm 119:130 KJV
You do not need a theology degree, a perfect schedule, or a complete understanding of Scripture before you begin. You need an open Bible, an honest heart, and a willingness to return tomorrow.
Begin with Jesus
The entire Bible matters, but a new reader often benefits from beginning with one of the Gospels. John helps us see who Jesus is; Luke gives an orderly account of His life and ministry. Read one chapter slowly instead of racing through several.
- Choose John or Luke.
- Read one chapter each day.
- Write down one truth about Jesus.
- Respond to that truth in prayer.
Read for relationship, not completion
A reading plan is a servant, not a master. The goal is not to move your eyes across a certain number of verses. The goal is to hear God’s Word, understand what it says, and allow its truth to shape your life.
When something is difficult, mark it and continue. Understanding grows through repeated reading, faithful teaching, prayer, and time.
Use three honest questions
Ask: What does this passage reveal about God? What does it reveal about people? What faithful response does it call for today? These questions keep interpretation anchored in the text and lead naturally toward application.
