What to Do When the Bible Feels Difficult to Understand
Practical steps for approaching unfamiliar language, difficult passages, and questions without giving up.

Difficulty does not mean failure. The Bible was written across many centuries, cultures, genres, and historical settings. Some passages become clear immediately; others reward patient reading and faithful guidance.
Read the surrounding passage
Begin with the paragraph, chapter, and book—not an isolated sentence. Ask who is speaking, who is being addressed, what has just happened, and what kind of writing you are reading.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Clear passages help illuminate difficult ones. Trace repeated themes and references, but do not force two verses together simply because they share a word. Context remains essential.
- Read the passage twice.
- Consult cross-references.
- Write the question in plain language.
- Ask a trusted pastor or teacher.
- Return to the passage later.
Remain teachable
Confusion can be an invitation to humility. Pray for understanding, learn within the local church, and resist teachers who build dramatic claims on obscure details while ignoring the plain witness of Scripture.
